UAB's inDegree wins Alabama Launchpad funding

A team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham took home $100,000 in seed funding for winning the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama's Alabama Launchpad competition.
According to a tweet from the EDPA, UAB's inDegree took home the grand prize. The team is developing an alumni-tracking service that helps universities to build stronger alumni communities and students to leverage their alumni networks in the job market.

Phil Straub, vice president of Garmin Ltd. and managing director of the company?s aviation product line, will be the keynote speaker at the Wichita Aero Club?s May luncheon on Tuesday.
Straub will be talking about avionics ? a field that is changing rapidly, says Aero Club spokesperson Dave Franson.

Part of Dallas-based Coach America sold out of bankruptcy

Stagecoach Group PLC, a Scottish bus company, announced Friday that it is buying part of Dallas-based Coach America Inc. for $134.2 million.
Stagecoach said the acquisition includes businesses in Texas and California, and will allow the expansion of Megabus, Stagecoach?s Chicago-based bus network.
Coach America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January, and the deal requires Bankruptcy Court approval.

Houston?s largest residential real estate firms increased their total gross dollar volume of closed sales in 2011 compared to 2010.

Texas unemployment rate drops to 6.9 percent

The Texas unemployment rate fell to 6.9 percent in April, down from 7 percent in March and 8 percent a year ago.
The state added 13,200 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in April, the Texas Workforce Commission said, and saw an increase of 225,800 jobs over the past year.
Unemployment in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington market was at 6.5 percent, down from 7 percent in March and 7.5 percent in April 2011.

As expected, the Greater Houston Partnership?s board of directors has endorsed the expansion at William P. Hobby Airport to provide international air service.

Nucor to buy Skyline Steel for $605M

Nucor Corp. has agreed to pay $605 million to ArcelorMittal for Skyline Steel, a distributor of steel foundation products, and its subsidiaries.
Skyline will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Charlotte, N.C.-based Nucor but will keep its headquarters in Parsippany, N.J. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter, according to ArcelorMittal?s website. Nucor has operations in Oak Creek. Skyline has no operations in Wisconsin.
