Asselbaye trades Hawaii gov?s office for coffeehouse

Amy Asselbaye, who abruptly stepped down from her prominent position as Gov. Neil Abercrombie?s chief of staff last October, is one of four partners who have opened a new coffeehouse in Hawaii Kai.
?I dedicated 18-and-a-half years to public policy,? Asselbaye told PBN. ?I was ready for a change. Like any family, when you get an opportunity to help another person, you do. This is my husband?s dream.?

The Yard House expansion to Lone Tree, announced last summer, has rescheduled its planned opening to July.
The company announced in August 2011 it would open in May 2012, but that date is now slated as July 1.
To staff the Park Meadow restaurant, Yard House will be hiring 200 new employees. Those interested have until June 9 to apply at the hiring center at 8439 Park Meadows Center Drive in Lone Tree.

Hawaii grants EIS exemption for geothermal exploration

The Hawaii Environmental Council made an important decision on Thursday that allows the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to do away with one part of expensive and time-consuming exploration ventures for geothermal projects.
Andrea Gill, renewable energy analyst for the State Energy Office, told PBN that each exploratory well costs approximately $5 million to $10 million to drill.

UH study predicts job growth in all four Hawaii counties

Hawaii?s four counties will each see job growth in 2012 as the construction industry finally begins to pick up on the Neighbor Islands, according to a new report by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization.
The number of payroll jobs rose in Honolulu, Maui and Kauai counties in 2011, but this year the Big Island will also see job growth and all four counties are projected to see jobs increase by more than 2 percent in 2013, UHERO said.

Hawaii man claiming discrimination gets new day in court

The Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals has reversed a court decision that had ruled a workplace discrimination lawsuit frivolous and resulted in a Honolulu car salesman paying his boss?s legal fees.
Those involved in the case say the reversal is important because it emphasizes that slurs based on ethnicity or nationality are illegal under civil rights law.
The reversal is based on a 2003 wrongful-termination lawsuit filed by Gerard Lales, who alleged he was wrongfully terminated from his job...
Denver Restaurant Week sets new records

Once again, Denver Restaurant Week set a new record this year for the number of meals served ? 404,400 ? Visit Denver reported Friday.
That?s up from last year?s total of 360,480 meals for the annual metro-wide restaurant promotion. The 2010 total was 335,580, and 2009?s total was 298,200.
The eighth annual event, held Feb. 25-March 9, also set a new record for participating restaurants: 339, up from 303 last year and 282 in 2010.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and its national trade association are facing a second class-action antitrust lawsuit.
Filed Thursday in federal court on behalf of plaintiffs Birmingham-based One Stop Environmental LLC, Nicholas A. Layman and all other BCBS of Alabama members, the suit alleges an ?ongoing conspiracy? by the local health insurance provider and 37 other Blue Cross companies not to compete in Alabama.

Hostess Brands bankruptcy could mean 130 Arizona job cuts

If Hostess Brands Inc. ? the maker of Twinkies, Wonder bread and Ding Dongs ? can?t solve its financial trouble via Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the company could liquidate.
That would result in 130 job cuts in Arizona and Hostess closing 16 locations statewide.
The company has already reported the possible cuts and closures to the state of Arizona. Five locations in the Phoenix area would be impacted.

Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz will be pitching Hawaii a tourist destination this week in Taiwan in and South Korea.
Schatz is scheduled to attend Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou?s inauguration and meet with him to discuss economic cooperation in tourism, higher education and energy, Schatz?s office said Friday.
Following the inauguration, Schatz is scheduled to travel to Taichung City and sign a collaboration agreement on clean energy and tourism.

American Eagle Outfitters said late Friday that it would exit its 77kids children's apparel business, perhaps selling part or all of it later this year.
The South Side-based company also said that CFO Joan Hilson will leave the company later this year. American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) made the two announcements after the market closed Friday.
