Silver Spring Transit Center doesn't meet Montgomery County requirements

A new engineering analysis has found that the Silver Spring Transit Center doesn't meet Montgomery County building code requirements, although it may meet minimum national safety standards, the Washington Examiner reported. The analysis by Parsons Brinckerhoff, the structural engineer the county commissioned to design the $112 million project, disagrees with a March report by general contractor Foulger-Pratt Contracting that said the facility is more than strong enough to serve its intended purpose.
IRS closes facilities in real estate consolidation plan

The Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday it will close 43 small offices over the next two years and reduce space at many other larger facilities, Federal News Radio reported. Seven nightclubs in Prince George's County are under fire for allegedly violating permits and failing to pay taxes, which has caused nearly $1 million in lost tax revenue, according to officials, The Gazette reported. A Portland city audit has recommended that the Portland Housing Bureau take steps to correct six "risks" identified for an agency that's facing reduced resources. Among other concerns, City Auditor LaVonne Griffin-Valade wants the bureau to add new policies to manage its $302 million loan portfolio. The bureau currently "does not have a long-term guiding policy for asset management and loan issuance" for its investment policies, Valade said. Montgomery County residents would pay higher taxes to fund new bus system

Residents in Montgomery County could pay as much as 15 percent more in property taxes to fund a new bus network, according to a county-commissioned report released on Tuesday, the Washington Examiner reported. County Executive Isiah Leggett promised to build the system, estimated to cost $1.8 billion to construct and an additional $1.1 million per mile to operate each year.

PetSmart Inc. saw its profits rise 33 percent in the first quarter as the company continued to see strong sales for its products and services. Phoenix-based PetSmart (Nasdaq: PETM) reported income of $94.7 million for the first quarter that ended April 29, or 85 cents per share, compared to the $70.9 million it made in the first quarter of 2011. Petition drive seeks to ban billboards in Phoenix

Phoenix voters may be asked to approve a measure that that would ban any new billboards within the city. Azcentral.com reported the petition drive by the Save Phoenix Views has turned in more than 33,000 signatures to get the initiative on the ballot. It needs 25,480 signatures to qualify, and the signatures still must be verified. The measure may not make it to the ballot until the next city election in March 2013.
Glendale moves forward with budget, money for Phoenix Coyotes deal

The city of Glendale moved forward with a preliminary budget that would give $17 million to the new buyers of the Phoenix Coyotes. Business Journal reporter Mike Sunnucks wrote the city is considering a budget that would give the money to the team's potential new owners as an arena management fee for Jobing.com Arena. The deal is one step in the process in getting the team sold from the National Hockey League, which bought it out of bankruptcy, into the hands of a group led by Greg Jamison.
