South Florida tourism officials are looking to seasonal values to draw additional visitors, with Memorial Day weekend launching the summer travel season.
Specials at area hotels are just one kind of added value being offered over the holiday weekend to draw out-of-towners and locals, especially as surveys show more people plan to travel this summer compared to last year, The Miami Herald reported.
ODOT considering rest stop leases to raise cash

The Ohio Department of Transportation is considering leasing rest stops to developers as a way to raise millions of dollars to pay for road projects, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
The department is prohibited by federal rules to commercialize 45 rest areas along interstates, but it might lease 56 rest areas along other highways to developers to build restaurants, gas stations and lodging, the newspaper reports. Those stops typically include parking, restrooms and vending machines.

Community Bank cleared to acquire 19 branches

Community Bank N.A. has received regulatory approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to acquire 19 new branches in Western and Central New York.
The Syracuse-based financial institution will now move forward with its acquisition of 16 HSBC Bank USA N.A. branches and three First Niagara Bank branches.
The former transaction is expected to close July 20. The latter will close Sept. 7, according to CFO Scott Kingsley.

Thomas Erb has been named chairman of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, the law firm announced Tuesday. Erb had been a member of the firm's Managment Committee since 1998, and he accepted the newly created appointment of vice chairman earlier this month. Erb has been practicing law with the firm for more than 30 years. The firm also said Tuesday that John Riffle has been named chairman of its corporate department. The Nature Conservancy and Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. are teaming up to get more people outside, and they have released a list of places Ohioans need to visit for a chance to win a new car, Columbus Business First reports.
The 30 sites were released on the Natural Treasures of Ohio website, the newspaper reports. Visitors to the sites can enter a sweepstakes to win a Honda Insight by submitting a photo of themselves with designated landmarks.

Port Columbus traffic down, Rickenbacker cargo up in April

Port Columbus International Airport had a 2.2 percent traffic decline in April, the first decline at the airport this year, Columbus Business First reports.
More than 526,000 passengers flew through Port Columbus last month compared with nearly 538,000 in April 2011, with the most significant decline coming at AirTran, the newspaper reports. Still, traffic is up by 1.8 percent through the first four months of the year.

Apple Inc. grew the value of the globe's most valuable brand by 19 percent in the past year, according to a report on Tuesday by market researcher Millward Brown.
The annual BrandZ study estimated Apple's brand is now worth $183 billion, or 37 percent of its market capitalization.

Employers wouldn't be able to require employees or job applicants to allow access to their Facebook and other social media accounts under a bill Illinois legislators sent to Gov. Pat Quinn, KMOX reports. The state Senate passed the measure Tuesday by a 55-0 vote, which followed approval by the House in March. The measure doesn't prevent employers from viewing workers' postings to the general public or from setting workplace rules on Internet and email use.
