First Boeing 787 built in South Carolina takes flight

The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner built at the company?s plant in North Charleston, S.C., took to the skies on Wednesday.
The aircraft took off shortly after noon Eastern time on what was expected to be a five-hour flight, according to a report from the Post and Courier newspaper.
Boeing had originally planned an 8 a.m. takeoff from North Charleston, but pushed the timing back for undisclosed reasons, the Post and Courier reported.

Joan Danieley will head new Rainbow Dialysis Center on Maui

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has named Joan Danieley president of the Rainbow Dialysis Center, which will open at the health maintenance organization?s Wailuku Clinic on Maui in early June.
The dialysis center will be managed by DaVita, one of the nation?s largest providers of kidney care needs, and will have an on-site nephrologist, Kaiser Medical Director Susana Mendoza said in a statement.

Hyatt Regency begins $50M makeover

The Hyatt Regency Dallas is starting a $50 million renovation to the hotel?s 1,120 guest rooms.
The makeover is set to be complete by the end of 2012 and is being led by Dallas-based Woodbine Development Corp.
Dallas-based CamargoCopeland Architects and EDG Interior Architects of San Rafael, Calif. make up the design team.

Board of Higher Education adds two members

The Oregon Senate on Wednesday confirmed Orcilia Zúñiga Forbes and James Middleton as the newest members of the state Board of Higher Education, which oversees the state's seven public universities.
The Senate also reappointed Jim Francesconi for another four-year term.
Middleton, president of Central Oregon Community College, replaces Portland Community College President Preston Pulliams, who is retiring.
Forbes is vice president emeritus of University Advancement at Oregon State University.

University of Colorado Hospital cuts ribbon on Anschutz Cancer Pavilion addition

University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora on Thursday will cut the ribbon on its $20 million expansion of the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion.
Construction of the five-story addition on the north side of the pavilion began in October 2010. The expansion adds 40,000 square feet to the pavilion, bringing total space to 148,000 square feet.
With the expansion, 11,500 cancer patients can be treated in a year, a 60 percent increase.

A pair of Hawaii companies could be getting plenty of business on Maui from Tricare, the health care system for U.S. service members and veterans. But how much money, how many jobs and what the work will entail are the questions.

Young Brothers Q1 Hawaii interisland cargo volume up 2.6%

Hawaii interisland shipper Young Brothers reported a 2.6 percent increase in its cargo volume for the first quarter of this year compared to the same time in 2011.
Young Brothers measures its cargo in what it calls container platform equivalents, or CPEs, and one of those units is the equivalent to a 20-foot container. The Honolulu-based company reported that it shipped 32,618.2 container platform equivalents in the first quarter of 2012 and 31,786.4 during the same time last year.

It looks like Tiffany Derry is trying to bring even more celebrity mojo to her Uptown restaurant.
The former Top Chef star has enlisted a few of her reality cooking show competition friends for a celebrity chef series at Private | Social.
Kevin Sbraga, Angelo Sosa and Carla Hall will each cook a four- or five-course meal with Derry. The dinners are priced a $125 per person and include wine pairings.

Maui County residents will begin paying more for electricity

Maui Electric Co. customers will see their rates increase by 3.16 percent as of June 1, following the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission?s approval of the utility?s interim rate increase.
The increase, which amounts to $13.1 million, affects ratepayers on Maui, Molokai and Lanai and reflects a settlement agreement between Maui Electric, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. (NYSE: HE), and the state Division of Consumer Advocacy, the utility said
