The head of the Birmingham-based Medical Properties Trust Inc. said Wednesday that the company plans to increase the amount it spends on acquisitions this year and next. Layoffs expected to save Hewlett-Packard up to $3.5B

Computer giant Hewlett-Packard said Wednesday it plans to lay off 27,000 workers, or about 8 percent of its workforce, over the next two years as part of a massive cost-cutting plan. According to MSNBC, the company said in a news release that the move will generate annual savings of $3 billion to $3.5 billion as it exits fiscal 2014. The world's No. 1 personal computer maker also said most of those savings would be reinvested into the company.

San Jose leads as the U.S. metro with the highest average annual pay for lawyers at $187,110, according to newly released figures for 2011 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The runners-up are Danbury, Conn., at $181,630 and San Francisco at $175,130.
